The purpose of this course is to create an understanding of outer space and our solar system. Some of the topics covered include galaxies, stars, solar system, etc. These topics will be explored with text, lecture, labs, and other hands-on activities. Following are specific class guidelines and policies.
For the next few class periods, you will be working on this project. Either as a group of no more than 2 or as individuals. Remember that if it is as a group, your answers need to be more detailed.
You will be looking at several different youtube videos and websites to obtain a better understanding of emission lines, absorption lines, the doppler effect, and modern telescopes. For each of the readings and videos, you will write a reaction summary for them. Then there is a word document at the bottom of the toggle. All the words that have an * by them need to be defined in the glossary. Do not just rely on the readings and videos that I have set up for you. You will need to do your own research for the different types of telescopes, etc. Do not forget that your book is a helpful tool also.
Here is a useful tip: It might be helpful to have two moodle pages open. One for adding information to the glossary and one to see the videos/readings from moodle.
This will be due Monday, November 30th. You might need to work on this outside of class. We will review the information on Monday, November 30th. We will have a partner exam on the information on Tuesday, December 1st.
First Video: What if you need a bit more help with the Introduction to Light
Stellarium is a free program that you will be able to download. This is a great way to experience a planetarium without traveling to one. This program allows you to look at all of the constellation lines, stars in the constellations, and the figures that go along with each of the constellations. For the next three class periods, you will be using Stellarium to locate four constellations. For each of those constellations, you will research the mythology behind the name, list the major stars in the constellation, and any other vital information. There will be a checklist available for this project, to check off your progress.
